Having a concrete pool on your property can bring you many advantages such as adding value, and the no small matter of you and your family having fun in that pool. However, concrete pools also means that you have a responsibility to ensure that anyone who is in or near your pool is safe at all times.
We are not saying that you need to go to lifeguard school, although it would not do you any harm, but, instead, you can implement a number of safety measures and protocols so that anyone using the pool, be that friends or family, do not come to harm. Here are those safety measures:
#1 Install A Safety Fence Around The Pool
There has been many a tragedy caused by children managing to get onto a property that was not their own home, entering a pool, and sadly getting into trouble with no one around to help them, or even realising they were there This is why we suggest that you install fencing or some other kind of barrier around your pool area, or your property as a whole.
#2 Automatic Safety Shutters
Having safety shutters that close across the top of the pool means that no adult, child, or even a pet can gain access to the pool when there is nobody to supervise them. These normally operate by simply pressing a button, and ideally one which incorporates a key switch so that no one can open the shutters without your knowledge.
#3 Have CPR / First Aid Equipment Close By
Keeping CPR and first aid equipment near the pool is what might be described as assuming the best but preparing for the worst. In any event, should someone’s breathing have stopped, or they receive a nasty head injury having banged it on the side of the pool, using the equipment as you await the emergency services may prevent them from having a more serious injury, or even save their life.
#4 Regular Inspections And Maintenance
The better anything is maintained the less chance there is of it causing problems, and in the case of a concrete pool, those issues are injuries or illness. Making sure that you inspect your pool regularly and follow the recommended maintenance program for it, will keep it safe. This extends to systems for keeping the water clean to ensure that bacteria levels do not rise to the point where they could cause illness or irritation
#5 Instigate Safety Rules
Whether you have adults, children, or both using your pool, beforehand you should outline to them the safety rules that you wish them to follow. Also, explain that any variation from them will mean you insist that they get out of the pool until they learn to stick to the rules properly.
#6 Have Plenty of Buoyancy Aids Around the Pool
This will be especially wise when there a lot of children who use your swimming pool. Buoyancy items can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and often in the form of toys. Not only are they fun, but they can help children stay afloat should they get into difficulty.
#7 Always Be Vigilant
Even if it is only you and your partner by the pool and they go for a quick dip, always keep an eye on them, just in case. This also applies when there are several others in the pool, especially children. Be alert at all times and ask others there to do likewise.
