Relationships - What your prospective partner's job reveals about them

It is a reality of dating life that the person and the career are somewhat inseparable. We spend so much time busy with work, that it can't help but shape our personality and circumstances. At the same time, certain career types attract certain kinds of people.

Take this list with a grain of salt: we're not intending to stereotype anyone and there are exceptions to every rule. But look at it this way: reading into a career choice has just got to be more accurate than astrology!

Military

The number one factor in dating somebody on active military duty is that they will move. A lot! They might be re-deployed and relocating every two years or less all over the world, without a lot of say in the matter. Higher-ranking military careers will usually lead to some financial stability later in life; perhaps even early retirement or a bridge into a military career. PROS: Brave, loyal, efficient, good life skills. CONS: If they've seen combat, they might have some emotional scars and even post-traumatic stress disorder. May also be very dominant, if not domineering.

Police/Fire/Rescue

These careers attract people with a naturally generous spirit who want to fix the world's problems, but they are also incredibly stressful. They'll be stressful for you, too; can you sleep alone at night knowing that your partner could be killed in the line of duty? Men who work these careers tend to attract women, as well, who are more in love with the image than the person. PROS: Strong, independent, street-wise, passionate. CONS: High stress may lead to substance abuse, cheating, or other reckless behavior. Law enforcement, in particular, has a high incidence of suicide.

Legal/Medical/Financial Professional

This is somebody who stuck it out in a university those extra four to eight years because they were determined to have a solid career. They will usually be very well-to-do, at the expense of working long hours and seeming to be married to their work. They do tend to be stable; once they've found a place to set up practice they stay there. They're almost guaranteed to be conservative in values. PROS: Integrity, reliable, organized, stable. CONS: May be controlling or manipulative, tend to bring their work home with them. Also have a high incidence of divorce.

Science/Engineering/Technology

These are the 'brain' jobs. They tend to pay well although not fantastic. Stable careers are a plus. Don't look for glamour in these professions; they're all about keeping your nose to the grindstone and leaving it to other people to stand on stage and bow to applause. However, of all the careers, your most interesting companions will come from these. PROS: Faithful, intelligent, stimulating, practical, book-smart. Some are quite fun to be with. CONS: Insecure, absent, opinionated, distant. May be more wrapped up in writing programs or solving equations than paying attention to their family.

Entrepreneur/Freelancer/Self-Employed

Look for a real maverick, here. This is somebody who decided to be the boss instead of working for one. The expected lifestyle is all over the scale, here; not everybody who thinks they're good at business actually is. But the successful ones will feel like a trip to the moon - who knows, they might become a famous business tycoon! Just be aware that this group is even more married to their job - when you work for yourself, you can't 'hide from the boss'. This group tends to be liberal in values. PROS: Original, self-sufficient, problem-solvers, action-takers. CONS: Unpredictable, restless. Some are impractical and unrealistic. May be over-confident.
