This is an important issue, and most experts recommend that it should be handled at the time of asking someone out, not much later in the evening when you are sitting down to dinner at a fancy place, or queuing up for tickets.
Use phrases that convey what you mean in a proper way. For example, it is perfectly all right to say, "This is awkward, but I would prefer if we each pay for ourselves. Is that all right with you?"
It is also perfectly acceptable to be honest when something is out of your range, and to suggest alternatives that are more affordable for you right now.
Always remember that where issues of money are involved, honesty is definitely the best policy.
