lifestyle dating do and do nots

(Post date: 2007-08-03)

Behaving correctly on a date – sounds like it should be easy, doesn’t it? Well, it isn’t, especially if you are not the best mannered person in your day to day life.

Don’t forget that being on your best behaviour, and following certain etiquette, is essential for success. So here are things to do and some to avoid while dating.

These dating etiquette tips will help you make the most of the experience.

Dating do’s

• Have a meaningful conversation; get to know your date better.

• Be on your best behaviour. It is important, just as with any important new acquaintance, to put your best foot forward.

• If the weather is hot and sunny, consider buying your date an ice cream. Enjoy it over a nice conversation or a walk in the park.

• Never have a first date in your apartment.

• Go to a quiet place. The best way to get to know each other is talking. Find a quiet place where both of you can hear and understand each other easily.

• For the first few dates, go to well lit places. It is important for you and your date to be able to see each other while you are talking.

• Talk about topics you both find interesting, like past experiences, your family and friends circle, and hobbies and so on. Funny stories and anecdotes can raise a laugh and are a good idea.

• Ask a lot of questions, but listen and respond as well. Questions will show that you are interested in your date, and what they think.

• Listen when your date talks. Listening makes your date feel important.

• Try not to interrupt when your date is talking, and pay attention to what they are saying.

• Never go out of your way to try to impress your date. Don’t go overboard.

• Have a plan for your date, organize the date beforehand. Decide and discuss a date and time, when you should meet, and where, where you will go, and so on.
• And, most importantly, remember to have fun.

Dating don’ts

• Don’t leave the planning for the last minute, or worse, ad lib. Don’t show up for your date without an idea of where you are going.

• Don’t talk about things that might make your date uncomfortable or embarrassed.

• Don’t be pushy. Let your date decide what the next step should be.

• Don’t lie or embellish about yourself. Be yourself and tell the truth.

• Don’t forget your manners. No one will ever want to go on another date with someone who misbehaves.

• Don’t check out other men or women when you are out on a date, don’t flirt with others. It only makes you look bad.

• Don’t tune out when your date is talking. You will look really bad if your date asks you something related, and you have no idea what they are talking about.

• Don’t discuss politics or religion. Not only do you not want an argument on a date, it may lead to unnecessary bitterness.

• Don’t discuss previous relationships, especially in the first few dates.

• Don’t talk about money, and definitely don’t try to show off or brag about your car/house/jet or anything else.

• No sex on the first date.

• Don’t under any circumstances swear or use vulgar language.
